Björn was the son of Reverend Jónas Ari Sigurðsson and Stefanía Ólafsdóttir. He grew up in the west on the Pacific coast but moved with his parents to Churchbridge, Saskatchewan in 1919. He studied theology at Pacific Lutheran University and ay Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary in Minneapolis where he graduated in 1934. He was a pastor in Manitoba and N. Dakota and at Keflavík air base during the war years.
