Byron Theodore Sigmundsson was born in Spanish Fork, Utah on May 15, 1914. He had the name Byron T. Geslison in Utah.

Byron completed grade school in 1931 and middle school in 1932 in Spanish Fork. After graduating from Brigham Young University in 1939, he also attended the university in the summers of 1940-41, 1954, 1956 and 1958. Byron taught for several years at Spanish Fork Seminary, but later became a salesman for well-known American companies. He held numerous positions within the Mormon Church in Utah and was a missionary in Germany and Austria 1935-38.
