Carl was the son of Jónas Ólafsson and Katrín Magnúsdóttir who lived in Lincoln County in Minnesota. There he attended primary and secondary school, then went on to graduate school from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. He majored in theology and was ordained a pastor and began serving the Icelandic congregation in Minneota on April 30, 1911. He served widely as a pastor in both Canada and the United States.
