Edward grew up in the home of his parents, Tryggvi Jónsson and Rósa Ingibjörg Jónsdóttir, early settlers in Pembina, N. Dakota. Edward went to study in Winnipeg, studying business at Success Business College. He moved west to the Pacific and was a merchant in Blaine. Ágústa was the daughter of Halldór Brynjólfsson and Hólmfríður Eggertsdóttir from Húnavatnssýsla. They lived at Birkines in New Iceland.
