Egill’s parents were Árni Eggertsson, real estate agent in Winnipeg, and Oddný Jónína Jakobsdóttir. He graduated from high school in Winnipeg and lived in Wynyard, Saskatchewan 1927-31 and 1938-41. He was a town councilor there for a while and was an office manager for his brother Árni in Saskatoon 1931-38. He was in the Canadian Air Force 1941-45 and lived in New York until 1946. From there he moved to Winnipeg and lived there after that.
