Einar Jónasson was born on January 7, 1848 in Dalasýsla. He died in Gimli, Manitoba on August 25, 1930.

Einar came west to Ontario, Canada in 1874 and was in Kinmount for a year. He was elected to a committee that chose a colonial area for New Iceland in the summer of 1875. He took land there north of Gimli in the Arnes Settlement and named it Hvítanes. He also lived in Mikley and Unaland in the Fljóts Settlement. He moved south to the Hallson Settlement in N. Dakota in 1881 and from there to the Thingvalla Settlement some time later. Continuing west, he moved to the Markerville Settlement in Alberta in 1888 and to Kelowna, British Columbia in 1892. He returned to New Iceland in 1899 and settled in Gimli.
