Eiríkur was the son of Jón Jónsson Austmann and Guðlaugur Halldórsdóttir. He grew up in the Akra settlement in N. Dakota, moved with his parents to the Roseau settlement in Minnesota, and later to Icelandic River (Íslendingafljót) in 1906. He was a farmer in New Iceland, but later moved west to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1918 and settled in Elfros.
