Elín came west in 1876 with her parents, Jón Jónsson and Ragnhildur Jósepsdóttir, and siblings. They were first in New Iceland, but then moved in 1880 to Winnipeg and later to Mountain, N. Dakota. There, Elín married Guðmundur Þórðarson, a farmer in Garðar.
