Gísli emigrated west to Winnipeg in 1886 together with his parents, Ólafur Ólafsson and Rannveig Sveinbjarnardóttir. Gísli worked for farmers in N. Dakota, worked on the road in Keewatin, Ontario, but then established himself in Winnipeg. There he turned to retail and was successful.
