Elín came west to New Iceland in 1876 and took land with Ólafur Jónasson in the Víðirnes Settlement south of Gimli. The farm was called Melstad and all of Elín’s sons took that name. The family lived there until 1881 and then moved to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota.
