Ólafur came west alone in 1877 and took land at Árnes in Markland, Nova Scotia. Elín arrived there a year later with the children and Ólafur’s sister, Snjáfríður. They moved from there to the Red River Valley in 1882 and settled in the Pembina Settlement in N. Dakota. They lived there after that.
