Guðmundur came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1882 and lived there for some time. In 1885, he took land in the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota, but moved from there in 1905 and settled in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. Elínborg came west in 1887 with her father, Jónas Bergmann Jónasson, and his second wife, Kristín Jóhannesdóttir. They settled in New Iceland.
