Þorleifur came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his mother, Þuríður Þorleifsdóttir, in 1888. They settled in Mikley. Þorleifur and Elinborg also started farming there; she had come west with her parents, Jón Jóhannesson and Solveig Grímólfsdóttir, in 1899. In 1920 Þorleifur moved the family to Riverton where they lived until 1945.
