Emil was the son of Reverend Björn Björnsson and Sigurbjörg Stefánsdóttir in Minneota. Sigurbjörg died there in 1905, Rev. Björn married Ingiríður Guðmundsdóttir on June 22, 1908. They lived in Winnipeg 1914-1938. Emil joined the Canadian Army in the first World War and fought in Europe. He fell ill there and was sent home to Winnipeg in 1917. He never fully recovered and worked in an office in the city.
