Eysteinn came to the West in 1902 with his widowed mother, Katrín Hildibrandsdóttir, and siblings. They went to the Framnes Settlement in Manitoba where Katrín’s sister, Guðrún, and her family lived.  Eysteinn lived there until 1906, when at ten years old, he was sent to live with his newly-married brother,  Sigurður, in Winnipeg. He grew up there, finished elementary and high school, and soon after began his teaching career. He married Helga and they moved to Oak Bluff by Lake Manitoba, where Eysteinn taught until 1931. That year he was hired as a school principal in Riverton.
