Friðbjörn came west directly to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1879 and then moved to New Iceland with his brother. He was on the Land Survey Committee in 1880 to lay out the area that later became the Argyle Settlement, where he settled and began farming. He left farming in 1912 and went on business, finally settling in Glenboro or Winnipeg.
