Friðrika was the daughter of Friðrik Sigurbjörnsson from Sjávarland in Þistilfjörður and Sigríður Jónsdóttir from Litla-Strönd at Mývatn, who were married in Winnipeg on September 25, 1877 by Rev. Páll Þorláksson. Friðrika was the first Icelandic girl born in Winnipeg. Halldór was the son of Þórólfur Jónsson of Miðdalir and Halldóra Halldórsdóttir. She died when Halldór was three years old. He moved west in 1887 with his foster parents, Eyjólfur Halldórsson and Guðrún Jónsdóttir. They settled in Winnipeg, where Halldór learned carpentry. Early on, Halldór became interested in music and was for a long time an active participant in the Icelandic music scene in the city. He conducted choirs and played in a brass band.
