Geir was the son of Ólafur Þorgeirsson, a print shop owner in Winnipeg and Jakobína Guðrún Jakobsdóttir. Geir grew up in the city and finished high school there. He studied engineering at the University of Manitoba 1920-1923. He worked on railway construction in Western Canada, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Later he worked for electric utilities in Eastern Canada. He was hired to design a mansion in Minneapolis. Later he returned to his home pastures and worked in his father’s printing company, Thorgeirson Company, which he later owned together with his brother Ólaf. Jónína was the daughter of Timoteus Guðmundsson and Þorbjörg Hallgrímsdóttir.
