Geirmundur Bjarnason was born in S. Þingeyjarsýsla in 1868. He took the last name Olgeirson in the west.

Geirmundur was the son of Bjarni Olgeirsson and Guðrún Ásmundsdóttir who came west in 1879. They first settled in New Iceland, but then moved to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota in 1881. Geirmundur lived there the rest of his life. Þórdís came west in 1876 with her parents, Davíð Jónsson and Þórdís Guðmundsdóttir. They were first in New Iceland, but later moved to N. Dakota.
