Gestur was the son of Hjálmar Hjálmarsson and Friðrika Jónsdóttir, who came west in 1873. They first lived in Ontario and later in the Liberty Settlement in N. Dakota where Gestur grew up. He joined the US Army in 1915, sailed to Europe and fought there. He returned to N. Dakota, was a game warden for several years but then moved with his wife and children to Winnipegosis in 1929 where he opened a store.
