Gestur came west with his parents in 1874 and lived in Kinmount, Ontario for a year. They moved to New Iceland in 1875 and lived in Gimli.
Gestur and Þórey bought land in the Geysir Settlement and settled there in 1885. They called their land Hagi.
Þórey came west with her parents in 1876 and the family settled in Breiðuvík in New Iceland, calling their farm Ljósaland.
