Gísli emigrated west to Winnipeg with his parents and siblings in 1878. They moved to New Iceland but then moved south to N. Dakota in 1880. Gísli bought land in the Sand Hills Settlement. Þórunn came west in 1876 with her mother, Jarðþrúður Guðmundsdóttir, and her brother, Halldór.
