Gísli came west in 1887 with his parents, Gísli Árnason and Ragnheiður Ósk Sigurðardóttir. The family settled in the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota where Gísli grew up. They moved from there to the Brown Settlement in Manitoba in 1899. Gísli worked with his father on the farm but then he bought his own land in 1916. Gísli stopped farming in 1963 and moved to Morden.
