Grace was the daughter of Jón Valdemar Þorláksson and Petrína Guðnadóttir, early settlers in N. Dakota. She received her teaching degree from N. Dakota State University and taught in various schools in North and South Dakota. During her studies, she also studied music and singing, singing in various choirs and often as a soloist. She got married in Chicago and then moved to Winnipeg with her husband. They later moved to California and settled in Oakland.
