Grímur Þórðarson was born on June 16, 1854 in Mýrasýsla. He died on April 23, 1911 in N. Dakota. He took the last name Thordarson in the west.

Grímur emigrated west to Milwaukee, Wisconsin with his parents and siblings. His father, Þórður Árnason died two months after they arrived. Grímur’s mother, Guðrún Grímsdóttir, settled with a Norwegian farmer in Dane County near Madison, Wisconsin. They remained there until 1876 when they moved to the Icelandic settlement in Shawano County where they lived until 1880. They moved to Garðar, N. Dakota. Ingibjörg emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with her parents in 1883.
