Gróa came west in 1889 with her widowed mother, Sigríður Pálsdóttir. Þorvaldur came west with his mother, Vilborg Jónsdóttir, and siblings in 1881. They settled in N. Dakota. Þorvaldur grew up there, lived in Walhalla, but moved as a young man to Roseau, Minnesota. In 1900, he, his wife, and their daughter were listed in the census as living in Dieter Township, Roseau County, Minnesota. They moved from there to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1903 and settled near Leslie where Þorvaldur ran a shop.
