Gróa came west to Ontario, Canada in 1873 with her parents, Sigurður Jón Jóhannesson and Guðrún Guðmundsdóttir. She was with them in Markland, Nova Scotia in 1875-1882 after which they moved to Winnipeg. Skafti came west to Canada in 1874 with his parents, Brynjólfur Brynjólsson and Þórunn Ólafsdóttir. They were in Kinmount, Ontario the first year, but then in the fall of 1875 they settled in Markland, Nova Scotia. They moved from there to Duluth, Minnesota in 1881 and then on to Pembina County where his father had bought land between Mountain and Hallson.
