Magnús emigrated west with his father and sister in 1879 and spent the first year in Ontario where he worked on constructing the railway. He moved west to the Thingvalla Settlement in N. Dakota in the fall of 1880 and bought land near his father a short distance from Mountain. He lived there until 1899, when he sold his land and moved near the town of Hannah north of the Canadian border. He lived there until 1925, then moved to Fargo, N. Dakota. Guðbjörg was the daughter of Guðmundur Sakaríasson and Guðný Tómasdóttir and was registered with her mother in the village in Fellssókn in Strandasýsla in 1880. It is uncertain what year she moved west, but it was probably in 1882.
