Jón came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents in 1889. He grew up in the Argyle Settlement and moved with his parents to Tantallon in 1900 and from there in 1910 to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. He took land near Kandahar. Guðbjörg was just a few months old when she emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with her parents, Jóhannes Jónson and Guðrún Andrésdóttir, in 1882. They lived in Winnipeg.
