Guðbrandur Jónsson was born in Dalasýsla on June 1, 1874. He died in Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 29, 1944. He took the name Brandur J. Brandson in the west.

Guðbrandur came west across the ocean with his parents and siblings in 1878. They first travelled to Lyon County in Minnesota but then settled in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota in 1880. He studied medicine in Winnipeg, Dublin, Vienna, and London. He settled in Winnipeg in 1905 and lived there the rest of his life.
