Guðjón Bergur Aðalsteinn Guðmundsson was born in Önundarfjörður in Ísafjarðarsýsla on November 26, 1890. He had the name George Brown in the west.

Guðjón first lived with his father and his family in Brandon, Manitoba, but moved in 1899 to Winnipegosis. He later moved to Winnipeg and lived there 1906 to 1911 but then the road led him to Saskatchewan, where he first lived in Bradenbury and then in Wynyard. In 1924 the family moved west to the Pacific and they lived in Seattle until 1936 but then moved to California. Ólafía was the daughter of Sveinbjörn Loftsson and Steinunn Ásmundsdóttir who came west from Dalasýsla to Winnipeg in 1887.
