Guðjón was the son of Kristinn Abrahamsson and Sigríður Árnadóttir in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. Ída was the daughter of Hjálmar Árnason and Guðrún Helgadóttir in the Framnes settlement. Guðjón and Ída lived in the Framnes settlement and started farming on their own land. They moved to Arborg in 1946 where Guðjón worked in a dairy store.
