Guðjón came west in 1888 with his parents, Guðvaldur Jónsson and Kristín Þorgrímsdóttir. They first settled in N. Dakota but moved in 1899 to Roseau in Minnesota and there Guðjón took land and lived for a few years. He later moved to the village of Badger in Minnesota where he worked as an assistant in a store. He married there and they moved south to Iowa where he ran a store for a number of years.
