Guðjón Gunnlaugur Jóhannesson was born in S. Múlasýsla on April 17, 1878. He died in New York on October 30, 1922. He took the name John G. Holme in the west.

Guðjón came west to Minnesota in 1885 with his parents, Jóhannes Sveinsson and Soffía Vilhjálmsdóttir. They settled in Swede Prairie Township in Yellow Medicine County, where Guðjón grew up. He was educated and became a well-known journalist and author.
