Guðjón was the son of Jón Sveinbjarnarson and Guðný Andrésdóttir who came west in 1887. They first lived in the Argyle Settlement in Manitoba, but then took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan on June 14, 1905 and moved there in 1907.
