Helgi came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1883 and went from there to the Pembina Hills in N. Dakota where his fiancee, Guðlaug Guðmundsdóttir, lived. She had come west the year before with her brother Guðmundur and her mother Jarðþrúður Jónsdóttir. Their brother, and Jarðþrúður’s son, Stefán Guðmundsson had settled there. Helgi took land in the Akra Settlement and lived there the rest of his life.
