Guðlaug was the daughter of Guðbjörn Jónsson and Ingibjörg Þorleifsdóttir. Guðbjörn was 5 weeks old when he came to the West 1886 with his parents, Jón Björnsson and Sólrún Jónsdóttuir. Ingibjörg was 11 years old when she came west with her parents, Þorleifur Sveinsson and Guðrún Eggertsdóttir in 1904. Hermann was the son of Ásgeir Þorbergsson Fjeldsted in Arborg, Manitoba and Ingunn Guðfinna Kristjónsdóttir of the Hnausa settlement. He attended school in Arborg and worked at Sigurdson-Thorvaldson Co. until 1943. He joined the Canadian army that year and was assigned as a supply officer. Guðlaug and Hermann moved to Winnipeg and lived there.
