Guðlaugur Jóhannesson was born in Selkirk, Manitoba on November 1, 1887. He died in April 1952. He had the name Gudlaugur Olafson, Laugi or Louie in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan.

Guðlaugur was the son of Jóhannes Ólafsson and Margrét Bjarnadóttir of Húnavatnssýsla, who came west in 1887. He grew up in New Iceland, but in 1906 the family moved west to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan where Jóhannes and Guðlaugur took land west of Wynyard. Jóhannes could not farm the land and went back to New Iceland, but Margrét stayed with her son.
