Guðmundur emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents, Ásmundur Ásmundsson and Elín Benediktsdóttir, in 1887. Ragnheiður emigrated a year later with her mother, Hildur Jónasdóttir. Guðmundur and Ragnheiður bought land in the Geysir Settlement and lived there for nine years before moving to Selkirk where Guðmundur died.
