Guðmundur Finnsson was born in Snæfellsnessýsla on November 27, 1853. He died in Selkirk on May 21, 1922.

Guðmundur emigrated to the West in 1876 and settled in Mikley in New Iceland where he worked in sawmill with machine control. In 1879 he got a similar job in a sawmill in the Fljóts Settlement. He decided to start farming in the Isafold Settlement in 1887, but he was not cut out to be a farmer. He worked on steamboats in Lake Winnipeg for the next few years, but in 1891 they moved to Selkirk where Guðmundur worked again in a sawmill.
