Guðmundur Guðnason was born November 4, 1876 in Dalasýsla. He died in Manitoba on August 18, 1935. He took the name Guðmundur G. Backman in the west.

Guðmundur came west in 1893 to Winnipeg, Manitoba and worked with farmers the first three years. He took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1903 and moved there in 1906, but this land was in Mozart. He sold it in 1910, moved to the Argyle Settlement in New Iceland on to land he bought there and lived there until 1919 when he moved to Glenboro.
