Guðmundur came west to Kinmount, Ontario with his mother, stepfather, and siblings in 1874. They moved from there in the spring of 1875 to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where they lived for some time. From there, the family moved to Elk Rapids, Michigan, where Helgi Guðmundsson and his family had arrived. His wife Helga was the sister of Sigríður, Guðmundur’s mother. Guðbjörg Helgadóttir came there in 1882. These families moved west together to the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota in 1884, but settlements there had grown somewhat and Helgi Guðmundsson was not successful. He and Guðmundur went west to the Mouse River Settlement to explore lands and Helgi chose a place there for himself and his family. Guðmundur joined them a year later, or in the spring of 1887, and lived there the rest of his life.
