Guðmundur was 14 years old when he emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1886. His parents, Þorbergur Fjeldsted and Helga Guðmundsdóttir, came west a year later. They moved to Mikley and Guðmundur lived there a few years. He moved in 1890 to Winnipeg and lived there eight years. In 1898, he moved onward to New Iceland and to Gimli and then bought the farm Ölduland in the Víðirnes Settlement in 1902.
