Guðný came west to Canada in 1876 with her parents, Gísli Benjamínsson and Guðbjörg Daníelsdóttir. Hans came west in 1873 and stayed with relatives in Wisconsin for the first few years. He moved from there to New Iceland in 1876 and settled in the Fljóts Settlement. There, Reverend Páll Þorláksson married them. From there, it was on to N. Dakota in 1880.
