She came west to N. Dakota in 1893 and settled in Garðar. There Herdís married Guðjón Jónsson from Strandasýsla and they took land in Brown Settlement in Manitoba. Guðjón died before he moved there, but his mother-in-law settled there with Herdís and her children. Herdís then sold the land after more than twenty years and moved to Lundar Settlement with her mother.
