Guðný’s parents, Jón Þorláksson and Petrína Guðnadóttir, lived near Mountain, N. Dakota but moved north to Manitoba about the turn of the century. Oddur came west in 1883 with his mother Sigríður Gunnlaugsdóttir and siblings, Oddur lost his father, Oddur Sigurðsson, in Iceland. Sigríður took land in the Garðar Settlement, but moved to the Morden Settlement in Manitoba shortly after the turn of the century. Tryggvi lived there the rest of his days.
