Guðný was the daughter of Sigbjörn Sigurðsson and Steinunn Magnúsdóttir and travelled west with them to Minnesota in 1878. Jóhann also came west in 1878, travelling with his cousin and foster brother, Jósef Jósefsson, and first lived with him Minnesota, even though his parents, Vigfús Jósefsson and Sigurborg Hjálmarsdóttir, had come west the same year. Vigfús took land in Limestone Township, while Jósef took land in Westerheim Township. Jóhann was a successful farmer, prospered, and cared for the community in various ways.
