Guðríður emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1912/13 with her daughter María. She worked in a store and sent money back to Iceland so that her children, Guðrún and Tyrfing, could come west. They moved to Selkirk where the children started school. While there, Guðríður decided to take the last name Hansen for herself and the children. In 1917 they moved to Riverton and lived there until 1935. Tyrfingur and María decided to move west to Calgary, Alberta and Guðríður decided to go with them.
