Guðrún was the daughter of Gunnlaugur Jóhannsson, a merchant in Winnipeg, and his first wife, Guðný Stefánsdóttir from Vopnafjörður. Guðrún graduated as a teacher in Winnipeg and taught there for four years, then went on to study nursing in Minneapolis, Minnesota and graduated in 1922. She was a school nurse in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from 1928-1955.
