Guðrún Helga Jörundsdóttir was born in Borgarfjarðarsýsla in 1868.

Guðrún came west in 1885 and Gunnar in 1887. He worked for the first year in railway construction, then moved to New Iceland. In 1894 they lived in Winnipeg, then moved east to Ontario where Gunnar worked for C.P.R. (Canadian Pacific Railroad). They moved to Winnipegosis in 1899. The couple took an active part in the social life of Icelanders in Winnipegosis and the surrounding countryside. Guðrún was the president of the Icelandic Chapter (þjóðræknisdeildarinnar) Harpa, and later the president of the women’s society Fjallkonan while at the same time the president of the Lutheran congregation.
